Seán Kelly was born in Knockataggle (Cnoc na tSeagail), Kilcummin, Killarney, County Kerry in 1952.  Sean was one of 6 boys and 1 girl born to Padraig and Hannah Kelly. His parents were both from hard working farming backgrounds and Sean was involved in farm work from an early age. Football - was the first passion of the Kelly household.  His grandfather had been chairman of the local club and his four uncles had distinguished playing careers.

Sean was educated at Kilcummin National School, Tralee CBS and St. Brendan’s College Killarney. He qualified as a primary school teacher in St. Pat’s College of Education and then attended UCD where he received a B.A. and Higher Diploma in Education. (first class honours) He worked as a teacher in Dublin (Cromcastle Green, Kilmore West) and in St.Brendan’s College, Killarney.

Sean is married to Juliette (nee McNeice) from Killarney, and they have four children – Padraig, Mairead, Laurence and Julie. They reside in Gortroe, Killarney.
